Power the Ultimate Experience
Power Management for Wireless Devices
Power control is essential in a modern handset design, as integrated multimedia and control features continue to push power consumption while long standby and talk times need to be maintained. Analog Devices offers a range of specifically designed, high efficiency, integrated solutions requiring reduced component count and
more compact cellular handset design.
High Efficiency, High Power, Feature-Rich Flash LED Driver for Mid- to High End Camera Phones
The ADP1653 is an ultracompact, high efficiency, 12 V boost converter, specifically designed and optimized for use in cellular camera phones. The ADP1653 consumes a mere 7.2 mm × 6.4 mm of board space while still offering high efficiency flash circuitry that can drive one string of high brightness LEDs up to 500 mA, as well as a separate indicator LED at lower currents up to 17 mA. This device employs a dual-mode interface, which can be set to I2C® or to a 2-bit logic interface. With both interfaces, the flash LED may be driven in torch or flash mode. The ADP1653 also offers a unique Tx masking feature intended to dynamically reduce the current of the flash LED in less than 50 µs, when the current of the power amplifier bursts in RF transmission. The ADP1653 integrates multiple safety features such as soft start, flash timeout, power NFET current limit, overthermal protection, and overvoltage protection. Small size, high efficiency, advanced programmability, and safety are just some of the key advantages of the new ADP1653 flash LED driver.

RF Power Detectors for 3G+ Communications
Third-generation communications systems utilize complex modulation schemes to provide increasing data rates. The resulting signals have large and changing crest factors (peak to average ratios). To avoid clipping of these signals, PAs must be operated in their linear region where they are less efficient and, thus, consume higher levels of power. Accurate power measurement and control will help extend the battery usage time as well as assure compliance to the local regulatory requirements, such as ETSI and FCC. Measuring the true power levels of complex waveforms can be very difficult. RMS power detectors are the best for this application as they measure the true rms power level of the signal. Log detectors and peak detectors are much more sensitive to crest factors and can introduce errors of 2 dB to 5 dB. Temperature stability is another factor since PAs will drift with time and temperature. Power detectors from Analog Devices exhibit minimal drift over the full –40°C to +85°C range. The two newest rms power detectors for handsets/mobile terminals from ADI are the ADL5500 and ADL5501.
 |
Features
- Operating frequency range of 50 MHz to 6000 MHz

Parallel Backlight Drivers
End users are demanding bigger, brighter, and thinner displays. The ADM8845 and ADM8843 charge-pump-based backlight drivers are designed for driving up to six and four white LEDs in parallel, respectively, while ensuring uniform brightness of a backlit LCD display. By individually monitoring each LED current, excellent matching performance is achieved. The ADM8843 and ADM8845 are also designed to maximize power efficiency by switching automatically between three charge pump modes based on the input voltage. For applications with severe height restrictions, the ADM8843 offers an ultrathin package height of 0.5 mm.
 |
Features
- One parallel WLED driver:
•ADM8843 supports 4 WLEDs
•ADM8845 supports 6 WLEDs
