The Ultimate Home Theater???
September 2007

Bob AdamsThis month's column is written by Denis Labrecque, Analog Devices DSPS marketing programs manager.

What do you want in a home theater system? There are hundreds of choices, but how would you design your ultimate system? How about a 505 watt amplifier with full 7.1 surround sound and multi-band acoustic equalization? Would you add an MP3 compatible 6-way CD changer and iPod inputs? How about a digital radio? Would you like automatic optimization of the sound, adjusting it to compensate for background noise? How about a custom graphical multi-media interface to control it all? Would you want futuristic styling, with 14 aluminum mesh finish speakers? How about the ability to reach 60+ mph in less than 6.6 seconds, and go over 150 mph while getting over 30 miles per gallon......???

“...a well designed car may be the ultimate place for listening to music”

Yes, I said 0-60 in 6.6 seconds – this is not your living room, but it is where many people spend most of their time listening to music – their car. Think about it – a well designed car may be the ultimate place for listening to music. It is an environment not unlike a recording studio where sophisticated, state-of-the-art signal processing equipment is placed in a professionally designed "room" with the speakers precisely tuned to the absorbing and reflecting surfaces, and where the position of the listener is fixed. And also where precision components, from analog to digital converters to multiple programmable processors, play a crucial role in shaping the user experience.

By the way, the above description is not a fantasy system – all of the above specs apply to the upcoming Audi A5 coupe; check out the details in our Audi customer case study.
